In the vintage consumer gear realm i'd opt for a DBX 4BX, the impact restoration circuit works quite well. I've also owned several RG processors that work fairly well. Competent service for these units is becoming hard to get, however.
If you have local venues for used pro gear, take a look at finalizers/mastering processors. The DBX Quantum is an excellent sounding processor. Find a Paul White/Focusrite and you've struck paydirt.
